From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Tourists in London will soon be able to check in to one of London’s most iconic landmarks with the opening of a new luxury hotel in Admiralty Arch.

Waldorf Astoria London, Admiralty Arch is set to welcome overnight guests for the first time in its history in autumn 2026, following an extensive restoration of the grade-I listed monument.

The monument is located on the opposite end of the Mall to Buckingham Palace, close to Trafalgar Square.

The arch was commissioned by King Edward VII in memory of Queen Victoria and designed by Sir Aston Webb, the architect behind the Buckingham Palace facade.

The hotel will feature 114 rooms and suites, with some named in reference to the building’s history and naval heritage, including the Nelson Suite, St James’s Residence and Victory Residence, named after HMS Victory.

Two dining options – Coreus and rooftop Café Boulud – from Michelin-star chefs Clare Smyth MBE and Daniel Boulud will celebrate British produce, with curated whisky collections and afternoon teas.

A grand ballroom spanning 3,540 square feet, featuring a nine-metre antique Murano chandelier, will host gala dinners, while a private spa with treatment rooms, a sauna, steam room and hydrotherapy pool is on offer for guest relaxation.

Dino Michael, senior vice president and category head, Hilton luxury brands, said: “Waldorf Astoria London – Admiralty Arch represents a rare convergence of history, place and possibility.

“To open a building of such cultural and national significance to overnight guests for the first time is both a privilege and a responsibility.”

General manager Guillaume Marly added: “We can’t wait to reawaken Admiralty Arch, transforming a national monument into a destination that feels unmistakably London: historic in stature, contemporary in spirit. It will be a place that is both timeless and entirely of the moment.”

Room reservations are open now for stays starting in 2027.
