Altrata’s Billionaire Census 2026 delivers a single figure that reframes how concentrated the top of the global wealth pyramid has become. The planet’s 29 richest people, who make up 0.7% of the billionaire population, held a combined net worth of $4.1tn in 2025, or 27% of all billionaire wealth. The report calls this group the “superbillionaires,” and the share they command has moved sharply in a very short window.
What the Number Actually Measures
The threshold for superbillionaire status is a personal fortune in excess of $50bn. That is a net worth cutoff, not income, and Altrata’s figures reflect the estimated value of an individual’s total asset base as of the 2025 data year. The combined wealth of the 29 implies an average fortune in the region of $140bn, though the report notes the distribution inside the tier is far from uniform.
Below that peak, the pyramid widens quickly. Altrata’s 2025 tiering shows 1,753 billionaires in the $1bn-$2bn band, 1,339 in the $2bn-$5bn band, 425 in the $5bn-$10bn band, and 249 in the $10bn-$50bn band. Almost half (46%) of the global billionaire population sits in the lowest tier, and the bottom two tiers together account for 82% of the billionaire class. The whole exercise counts 3,795 billionaires globally in 2025, identified through Altrata’s wealth intelligence methodology. Individuals below the $1bn net worth line are excluded from the billionaire count entirely; they show up instead in the broader 553,100 ultra high net worth individuals (UHNW, $30m-$1bn) and 5.3 million very high net worth individuals ($5m-$30m) that Altrata tracks separately.
Trend Line Is Accelerating
The widening is carried by the endpoints. The 27% share held by superbillionaires in 2025 has jumped from 16.3% in 2023, and is almost four times higher than in 2017, when only 10 billionaires each held a $50bn+ portfolio. One tier down, the concentration is compounding as well: 278 billionaires each held a fortune in excess of $10bn in 2025, up from 192 in 2021.
The total pool is expanding underneath them, but the tip is expanding faster. Total billionaire wealth rose 12.8% to a record $15.1tn in 2025, equivalent to almost a quarter of the total market capitalization of the S&P 500 at the time, and the billionaire population grew 8.2%, its strongest expansion in five years. That is the ratio to hold in mind: the group is getting larger, and the very top is pulling away from the rest of it.
Why This Matters if You Are Nowhere Near a Billion Dollars
The mechanism is the same market retail investors own. Altrata identifies the AI investment boom as a major driver of 2025’s wealth gains, alongside scalability gains in the technology sector, soaring AI-focused company valuations, and compounding capital-market gains. Superbillionaire fortunes are dominated by equity stakes in listed and private companies, not cash. The report highlights Larry Page (Google) and Jeff Bezos (Amazon), and singles out Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual, who became, temporarily, the first trillionaire following the public listing of SpaceX.
That is the transmission line to an ordinary brokerage account. When a handful of AI-adjacent mega-caps and richly valued private listings drive the S&P 500’s upside, they also drive the wealth share at the top of Altrata’s pyramid. The same index concentration that lifts a passive investor’s balance is what pushed 29 people to 27% of billionaire wealth. Position sizing in the largest names is now a macro question, and the suppliers powering the AI buildout (we broke down seven of them, from power to cooling, in a free report here) are riding the same wave.
The signal for investors is straightforward. Wealth is compounding where the equity beta of the AI cycle is most concentrated, and Altrata’s 2025 numbers say that concentration is accelerating, not plateauing. Watch the mega-cap complex and the largest private listings; that is where the next move in this ratio gets decided.
