Poppy, my rescue Chihuahua mix and constant travel companion, has logged enough miles to know exactly when she is simply being tolerated by hotel management. But at the brand-new Pueblo Bonito Vantage San Miguel de Allende, she wasn’t just accepted—she was actively worshipped.
I initially traveled to Mexico looking for a premium human getaway in one of the world’s most enchanting colonial cities. Ultimately, it became abundantly clear that Poppy had come for a full-scale luxury wellness retreat, while I mostly just tagged along to handle the bill.
Within hours of checking into this spectacular new luxury property, Poppy was stretched out on a custom plush bed while a 20-minute professional canine massage began. The therapy session began with the soft ring of a singing bowl and seamlessly transitioned to therapeutic massage, custom aromatherapy mists, targeted chromotherapy, and a gifted energy crystal.
Halfway into the massage, her bottom teeth were poking out, her body had gone completely limp with bliss, and I was left wondering whether she had just experienced the single greatest wellness retreat of either of our lives.

Navigating the reality of modern pet policies
I have traveled with Poppy through multiple Mexican states on numerous writing assignments, and she always seems especially comfortable the moment we cross the border. Over the years, our adventures have inspired me to map out the best dog-friendly solo travel destinations globally, making her an incredibly seasoned critic of hotel hospitality.
But even by her highly demanding standards, the hospitality at this brand-new property felt entirely different from our usual luxury stops. The term “dog-friendly hotel” has completely lost its meaning in modern luxury travel.
Too often, it translates to a basic water bowl dropped in the room and a strict, multi-page list of rules designed to make your pet feel invisible. Sometimes it means an exorbitant nightly pet fee that makes you wonder whether your dog is secretly ordering top-shelf tequila from the minibar while you are down at the pool.
Inside the Pueblo Bonito Vantage pet experience
At the Pueblo Bonito Vantage San Miguel de Allende, there were absolutely no hidden pet fees during our stay. There was no icy “please-keep-the-animal-out-of-sight” energy from hotel management, and no sense that the pet amenities existed only as a social-media marketing stunt.
Instead, through its dedicated Welcome Wags pet program, the resort treats four-legged guests to the same premium culinary standards as their owners. The service effortlessly rivals the top-tier guest care I recently experienced while reviewing The St. Regis Longboat Key resort in Florida.
The hotel features an extensive, five-choice gourmet dog menu available for both in-room feeding and at their stunning outdoor restaurant venues. Curated dishes like “The Guardian Dog” feature lean beef and chicken livers, while pescatarian pups can indulge in “The Fisherman,” made with fresh salmon and rosemary purée.
In addition to massage treatments, the hotel’s dog program includes guided walks, a pet spa, a dog menu, picnic experiences, and turndown-style touches. Unlike many resorts, prices are also reasonable. The massage was around $15 plus a 15% service charge.
Unwinding in contemporary Mexican design
While Poppy was living her best life, the hotel proved to be an equally extraordinary sanctuary for humans. The newly opened property sits beautifully within the traffic-free Distrito Corazón (Heart District), right in front of the manicured paths of Zeferino Gutierrez Park.
The architecture is a breathtaking homage to the city’s rich Spanish and Moorish heritage, featuring grand wooden gates that open to create a dramatic “visual layering” effect. As you stand in the entry hall, you can look straight through the property to see the iconic, pink-spired Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel rising over the historic center.
The resort comprises 111 beautifully appointed guest rooms and suites that showcase the very highest style of contemporary Mexican design. My room was a masterclass in textures, outfitted with rich velvets, hand-crafted artisan furniture, and lavish area rugs.
The high-tech lighting fixtures and a state-of-the-art Bose sound system allowed me to set a perfectly relaxing mood after a long day of exploring. To top it off, human guests are treated to an extensive pillow menu, plush bathrobes, and high-end L’Occitane bath products.
Sampling the culinary arts from rooftop to pool
The culinary operation at the resort is an absolute masterpiece, overseen by an array of world-class dining spaces that celebrate local ingredients. For a casual bite, Casa Bistro on the main level serves as the hotel’s full-service restaurant, offering an elevated all-day Mexican menu alongside international favorites.
But the undisputed crown jewel of the hotel’s dining scene is LaFrida, located on the top floor. The intimate dining room is a celebration of vibrant color, featuring indigo blue and raspberry-colored walls accented by antique Venetian mirrors.
With only 28 exclusive seats, booking a terrace table in advance is mandatory to secure the best views of the city’s illuminated parish. The kitchen focuses on a highly refined interpretation of Mexican cuisine, perfectly paired with a sophisticated regional wine program.
For daytime relaxation, the Tapas Pool & Lounge borders a stunning outdoor pool area. It focuses on quick, shareable wood-fired pizzas, fresh tapas, and a diverse margarita menu that keeps you refreshed while lounging in the sun.
As the sun begins to set over the cobblestones, the action shifts to the V Rooftop Bar. It is the premier spot in the city for artisanal cocktails, small plates, and panoramic sunset views of the historic quarter.

Experiencing world-class wellness at Aromatika Spa
If you manage to tear yourself away from the pool deck, the on-site Aromatika Spa & Wellness center offers an unparalleled holistic journey. This isn’t just a basic hotel spa with a couple of treatment tables; it is a massive, full-scale wellness facility.
Guests are encouraged to arrive early to move through their extensive hydrothermal circuit. The sequence features a massive whirlpool, a polar plunge pool, a traditional sauna, a steam room, and specialized contrast showers.
Because Mexico is rapidly gaining international recognition for its incredible wine production, the spa uniquely layers regional vintages into its care menu. You can book decadent, antioxidant-rich therapies that center around grape-derived wine baths and crushed grape body scrubs.
They even host interactive workshops where you can harvest fresh herbs from the organic garden outside to grind up your own personalized body scrubs and essential oil spritzers. It is a deeply immersive, sensory experience that matches the artistic soul of San Miguel itself.
Why this property sets the new gold standard
Founded in 1542, the nearly 500-year-old colonial gem of San Miguel de Allende is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site that has long served as a magnetic sanctuary for artists, history buffs, and a thriving global expat community. The narrow streets rise and dip over beautifully worn stones, bright bougainvillea dramatically spills over historic stone walls, and local artisan shops showcase centuries of traditional know-how.
The Pueblo Bonito Vantage acts as a perfect sanctuary within this bustling cultural hub, allowing you to immerse yourself in the energy of the city’s main plaza, El Jardín, and then retreat to a quiet oasis where your entire family is pampered. It is easy for a luxury brand to add a basic pet policy to their corporate website, but creating an environment where both humans and small rescue dogs are treated like true royalty is a spectacular feat.
If you are looking to book a summer escape to a historic Mexican destination where you don’t have to leave your best friend behind, this property has officially set the benchmark. Just make sure you book your pup that relaxation massage when you check in—otherwise, you are definitely doing it wrong.
