Japanese design and engineering are known the world over as some of the best. Those two elements come together beautifully in a multitude of products, perhaps most impressively when it comes to timepieces. Japanese watchmakers like Citizen have spent a century building a reputation with shoppers for both beauty and accuracy without sacrificing affordability. That’s why their watches are seen on the wrists of people in every segment of society. You’re just as likely to see a Citizen watch being worn by celebrities as you are to see it on firefighters and bank tellers. The brand makes a luxury watch for the masses, and it does it better than anyone else.

While some may only consider a watch as a luxury piece if it costs multiple thousands of dollars, this is a misguided classification. As a watch collector myself, I would argue that what constitutes a luxury watch goes far deeper than just the price tag. Personally, I believe that any watch that’s designed with intention, manufactured with a reverence for the art of watchmaking, and sold with a price that reflects both its quality and a respect for the consumer is a luxury watch. That’s why any Citizen timepiece that I’ve ever held in my hand has fit as comfortably in that category as it has on my wrist.

What wearing a Citizen says about you

As stated above, it’s no surprise that celebrities are rocking Citizen watches regularly. That’s precisely because the brand isn’t obsessed with image. It’s obsessed with elevated design and good quality. If those are values that you share with the brand, then a Citizen watch is likely either in your collection or in your future.

Citizen customers tend to be fiercely loyal to the brand, because the brand is fiercely loyal to its customers. Other watchmakers at an affordable price point are perfectly content to simply copy a more expensive watch brand’s design, slap its own logo on the dial, put a subpar 3rd party movement inside, and call it a day.

This is not how Citizen does business. It takes its design and manufacturing seriously, and doesn’t cut corners to keep costs down. Even its most affordable watch lines use Miyota quartz movements to power them. Miyota is owned by Citizen and has multiple manufacturing plants throughout Japan where they’re made. Citizen manages quality control at every level and ensures the integrity of its watch movements through constant inspection and innovation.

If ever there was a consumer product that was the definition of “the finer things in life”, it’s a Citizen watch. That’s why those who wear these timepieces are a special breed. If you choose to own a Citizen, then you’re a discerning buyer and likely a snappy dresser. Above all, you understand that true luxury isn’t measured by a dollar sign, but by what’s actually behind it.

The Citizen Classic Silver-Tone watch is the perfect example of all the qualities that Citizen has built its reputation on. For starters, it’s absolutely gorgeous to look at. The watch has a rust- and corrosion-resistant stainless steel case and bracelet that look every bit like what you’d see on a luxury Swiss piece. The case measures 42 millimeters, striking the perfect balance between comfort and legibility.

The real star of the show, however, is the dial. The stunning silver sunburst dial will get you all the right attention, especially in bright lighting. There are matching silver-toned applied hour markers, a perfectly positioned date window at the bottom, and a classic blued seconds hand. A luminescent coating on the handset also allows for low-visibility timekeeping. The Miyota Japanese quartz movement within is more accurate than most Rolex mechanical watches, so you’ll never have to worry about being late.

    More Citizen watches

If, for whatever reason, this specific watch isn’t to your liking, the brand has a host of other options worth considering. While the affordability of this particular quartz piece is appealing to many, you may be looking to spend a little more. If that’s the case, then I’d recommend either one of Citizen’s impressive Eco-Drive models or even a high-end automatic watch. Eco-Drive watches are powered by solar energy, while automatic models utilize the motion of your wrist to continually wind the watch. No matter your preference, Citizen has a watch to suit just about everyone. All you have to do is look.
