    Summary

Luxury items valued at thousands of dollars are eft on planes annually, fueling the never-ending treasures found in airline lost-and-found bins.

From Givenchy gowns to Cartier watches, passengers often forget their high-end goods without a second thought while traveling.

The Unclaimed Baggage 2023 report reveals a trove of lost luxury items on planes, showcasing the lavish lifestyles of some forgetful travelers.

Unbelievable as it may seem, some flying passengers do indeed forget an almost $40,000 watch on the plane. While wearing comfortable attire on a plane is a priority for most, as is budget-friendly travel, there are, however, still many travelers who fly in style—wearing expensive coats and jewelry while carrying luxury handbags and high-end electronics, showcasing their affluent lifestyles and lavish travel.

Every year, airlines become the lost-and-found bins for different kinds of stuff that people leave on planes—from the most common nicknacks and unique and unusual items to the most expensive goodies. They’re like treasure troves of forgetful passengers who hurriedly disembark from the plane, leaving their precious goods behind.

In 2023, there were more than two million items found on planes. According to the inaugural 2023 report by Unclaimed Baggage, the expensive finds they discovered while sifting through bags and suitcases were mostly handbags by Coach and Michael Kors, as well as watches, jewelry, and, of course, the most common, underwear.

Here are some of the most expensive things people left on planes in 2023. Perhaps luxury goods should be among the perfectly safe things people can’t take on planes in the future; such precious items themselves aren’t safe, given how often passengers seem to lose them!

Founded in 1970 by Doyle Owens in Washington DC, Unclaimed Baggage is a store that re-sells items found on planes three months after they’re deemed unclaimed. The store has purchasing agreements with all domestic airlines and other travel and transportation companies.

Designed by LV’s men’s artistic director, the late African-American designer Virgil Abloh, the Air Force 1 (AF1) sneakers come in nine different coveted styles and colors.

The sought-after sneakers were a fusion of Louis Vuitton men’s collection materials by Abloh and Nike’s aesthetic materials and its classic sneaker silhouette. And to think that someone left a pair of them on a plane, which is valued at $12,000, is insane!

Founded in 1854 in Paris, France, Louis Vuitton has been making headlines in the luxury fashion industry. Nike, founded in 1964, is an American athletic footwear and apparel line, one of the brands that has been crafting the most comfortable outfits to wear on a plane, perfect for globetrotters!

Hermès Birkin 25 Bag Rose Azalee Swift Tote

    Appraised at $23,500

Intricately designed and crafted in a rare heritage leather and iconic Hermès character, the Birkin bags were created for moms in 1984, (particularly British actress Jane Birkin) who told then Executive Chairperson of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas, that she had a hard time looking for a bag that suits a mother’s needs.

Dumas then sketched a rectangular holdall with a dedicated spot for a baby’s bottle, designed with a burnished flap and saddle stitching. It’s a Birkin bag! One is a Birkin 25 Bag Rose Azalee Swift Tote, which was left on a plane in 2023, orphaned and sifted by Unclaimed Baggage. How much? It’s $23,500!

Established in Paris, France by Thierry Hermès in 1837, Hermès specializes in lifestyle accessories, home furnishings, fragrances, make-up, jewelry, and watches. The Birkins might be one of the more luxurious things to buy for those who are visiting Paris for the first time!

Type of Lost Item: Tote Bag

The Hermès flagship store is located in the Golden Triangle in Paris.

    Cartier Panthère Watch

    Appraised at $26,500

Inadvertently left behind on a plane in 2023, the Cartier Panthère Watch is appraised at a staggering $26,500. Also known as Panthère de Cartier, it’s one of the most distinct designs by Cartier, designed with a magnificent square bezel and adorned by precious metals and crystals like gold, diamonds, and exquisite gemstones.

Some probably can’t help but wonder how many places the watch had traveled and the stories it had witnessed before it slipped away from the hands of its owner. Its timeless elegance symbolizes strength, grace, and refinement, and it would be very disappointing to lose such a luxurious timepiece.

Cartier was founded in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier in Paris and specializes in leather goods, jewelry, and watches. For those who are visiting the Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile, located in the Champs-Élysées avenue, one of Cartier’s flagship stores is also here!

Perhaps it was an engagement ring, a symbol of commitment and love, a present from a loved one, or someone’s gift for herself, and to lose it is disheartening. Unclaimed Baggage sifted through the most expensive stuff found on planes in 2023 and found a 14-Karat Gold Diamond Ring, appraised at $37,050.

Unclaimed Baggage didn’t elaborate or state the details of the ring, but given its appraisal amount, it obviously made everyone believe how it was delicately and meticulously crafted with its impeccable design and encapsulated beauty.
