Alphabet shares staged a modest recovery from their record-breaking selloff, propelling co-founder Sergey Brin back above Jeff Bezos and Michael Dell to reclaim the No. 3 position on the world’s richest list. Just a day earlier, concerns over the Google parent’s ballooning AI-related spending had vaporized roughly $17.1 billion from Brin’s fortune in a single session.

Alphabet’s stock edged up 0.5% during U.S. trading on July 24, restoring Brin’s estimated net worth to $243.1 billion (approximately $242.9 billion). The gain allowed him to overtake Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos and Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell, both of whom had surged past him during the previous day’s carnage.

A Billionaire Ranking Shaken in a Single Day

The dramatic reshuffling was triggered by Alphabet’s second-quarter earnings release on July 22. While revenue jumped 24% year-over-year to $119.8 billion — with Google Cloud revenue surging an eye-popping 82% — and the company notched its 12th consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, the market was far from euphoric.

Investor attention zeroed in on the company’s AI-related capital expenditure outlook, which soared to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion (approximately $205.1 billion). Concerns spread rapidly that recouping these massive investments would take considerable time.

The situation worsened on July 23 when Google was slapped with a $1 billion antitrust fine by the European Union. Alphabet shares plunged more than 7%, erasing roughly $255 billion (approximately $255.1 billion) in market capitalization — the largest single-day market cap loss in the company’s history.

The stock rout slashed Brin’s net worth by more than $17 billion (approximately $17.1 billion). Brin, who holds an estimated 362.7 million shares representing roughly 3% of Alphabet’s total equity, temporarily tumbled to fifth place on Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires List, trailing both Bezos and Dell.

The picture flipped entirely on July 24 as Alphabet shares staged a minor rebound. The 0.5% uptick in Brin’s fortune was enough to push him back above both Bezos and Dell, reclaiming the No. 3 spot.

The Double-Edged Sword of AI Investment

The selloff episode highlights how market scrutiny is rapidly intensifying on Alphabet, long considered a clear “winner” of the AI boom. The company is building a formidable position in artificial intelligence, with its conversational AI “Gemini” reportedly reaching 950 million monthly active users.

Yet a nagging doubt is simmering among investors: no matter how much the company earns, it may spend even more. The lengthy timeline required to convert enormous AI investments into actual profits has come back into sharp focus. This anxiety over AI-related costs is hardly unique to Alphabet — other tech giants including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle have all experienced share-price declines driven by similar concerns.

Meanwhile, Michael Dell’s surge — which briefly placed him ahead of Brin — reflects the market’s enthusiasm for companies with strength in AI “infrastructure.” Dell Technologies has ridden a wave of soaring demand for AI servers, propelling its stock higher. Dell has added tens of billions of dollars to his fortune this year alone, including a single-day wealth gain of roughly $35.8 billion (approximately $5.9 trillion) in May, when shares skyrocketed over 32% on strong earnings.

    Real-Time Fluctuations in “Paper Wealth”

Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires List recalculates the fortunes of the ultra-wealthy continuously throughout the trading day, based primarily on publicly traded stock holdings. For companies like Alphabet and Dell Technologies, where founders still hold massive equity stakes, even minor share-price swings can trigger multibillion-dollar shifts in net worth — easily reshuffling rankings.

For Brin, who stepped down as Alphabet’s president in 2019 and now serves as a board member, the wild swings serve as a stark reminder that the vast majority of his fortune is “paper wealth” subject to the whims of market sentiment.

As this episode demonstrates, in a market gripped by both excitement and wariness over generative AI, even the hierarchy of the world’s top billionaires can be instantly redrawn by daily stock-price movements.
